Why start a poetry bookshop?Waarom een poëzieboekhandel beginnen?

A good question. According to the Dutch ‘Cultuurindex’ (by Boekmanstichting) only 2-4% of books sold in the Netherlands are poetry. So, not for the big bucks.

Then, why?
The short answer is: because we can and it makes us happy.
The long answer comes down to the same, but I will elaborate:
After many years as enthusiastic and dedicated library suppliers (INDEX Books) serving a first-rate clientele – which of course we will continue to do – it is time to dig deeper and fly higher.

Inspired by beautiful bookshops such as Hart's Books in Saffron Walden (UK), Blackwell's Bookshop in Oxford and The Poetry Bookshop in Hay-on-Wye, but also in the Netherlands Perdu and the bookhops in Leiden De Kler, Van Stockum, Mayflower Bookshop, Kooyker, Burgersdijk & Niermans and De Slegte, we wanted to create a place where you can find what you are looking for, but will also be suprised by what you did not know existed.
A stage for poetry from all over the world of all ages. A place for beauty.

So, why a poetry bookshop?
…because, if you can, add some beauty to the world
…because sometimes you have just go without thinking
…because there are never really enough bookshops
...and because sometimes poetry is the only option.Een gerechtvaardigde vraag. Volgens de Cultuurindex (van Boekmanstichting) is namelijk maar 2-4% van de verkochte boeken in Nederland poëzie. Niet voor het grote geld dus.

Waarom dan wel?
Het korte antwoord is: omdat het kan en omdat we er gelukkig van worden.
Het lange antwoord komt op hetzelfde neer, maar hier een toelichting:
Na vele jaren met enthousiasme en toewijding als library supplier (INDEX Books) een eersteklas klantenkring te hebben bediend – waar we overigens gewoon mee doorgaan – is het tijd voor verdieping.

Geïnspireerd door prachtige boekwinkels zoals Hart's Books in Saffron Walden in Engeland, Blackwell's Bookshop in Oxford en The Poetry Bookshop in Hay-on-Wye, maar natuurlijk ook door Perdu en de Leidse boekhandels De Kler, Van Stockum, Mayflower Bookshop, Kooyker, Burgersdijk & Niermans en De Slegte willen we een plek maken waar je kan vinden wat je zoekt, maar ook verrast kan worden door wat je nog niet wist dat er was.
Een platform voor poëzie uit alle windstreken en van alle tijden. Een plek voor schoonheid.

Dus, waarom een poëzieboekhandel?
…omdat, als je kan, je iets moois aan de wereld toe moet voegen
…omdat je soms de deur uit moet stappen zonder je te beraden
…omdat er nooit genoeg boekwinkels zijn
…en omdat soms poëzie de enige optie is.
